Dual learning at Royal Berkshire

Royal Berkshire and VP|Ed coordinate two concurrent virtual courses for different stages of learning.

VP|Education have previously collaborated with the cardiac cath lab team at Royal Berkshire Hospital to deliver our new, tailor-made “Foundations in Complex PCI” course. Following on from the success of this Foundations course over summer, VP|Ed were asked to return to Reading to provide further training to the ever-growing, ever-evolving team at Royal Berkshire.

With a new cohort of AHP’s having started recently in the labs, VP|Ed’s Carole and Thea easily identified discrepancies in the learning pathways and desires of delegates wanting to attend the course. To alleviate such differences, and to provide suitable and appropriate content, Carole and Thea delivered two courses concurrently, all of which was delivered virtually whilst maintaining a socially-distanced physical environment.

A separate day-unit bay was assigned to each group, and VP|Ed provided AV equipment to support the virtual education delivery.

Carole’s group had just begun their learning pathway, and Carole was able to deliver a mixture of Introduction to Wires and a few taster slides from the Foundations course, blending the two seamlessly as directed by the needs of her delegates.

Thea took charge of the group who had already attended our Foundations course and carried on their more complex learnings with an overview of CTO pathophysiology and treatments.

Jobin Cherian, Superintendent Cardiac Physiologist at Royal Berkshire, and facilitator of the day’s events, commented “This was the first time we tried to do two different sessions parallel from the same company… though the training sessions were online, it was interesting and interactive. The knowledge of both presenters/ trainers (Thea and Carole) was commendable…, and the team members thoroughly enjoyed the sessions they were on”.

The dual-learning day was extremely well received by the team at Royal Berkshire, Attending Thea’s CTO presentation, one Senior Cardiac Nurse noted “Your excellent presentation on CTOs… was very informative, concise, clear, interesting, simple to understand and fun”.

VP|Ed will return to Reading in 2021 to deliver further Foundations programmes, and dual learning sessions are expected to become regularly available to cath lab teams up and down the country.

A massive thank you to the team at Royal Berkshire Hospital!
